Sheriff Wayne Ivey and members of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office are proud to announce a new initiative to help children in need of bicycles for the Holidays. The program, “Handlebars for the Holidays,” is a partnership between the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida East Coast Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Bike Program, created in 2006, provides refurbished, abandoned or unclaimed bicycles to those in need. The bicycles are reconditioned using Jail Inmate labor. The bicycles are then donated to Sharing Centers throughout Brevard County, who give them to local children for Christmas, Holidays and birthday presents as well as to adults in need of a bicycle as their primary means of transportation. To date, the Sheriff’s Bike Program has provided over 5,000 bikes to people in need.

Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) is the largest U.S. commercial construction trade association. Since 1995, the Florida East Coast Chapter of ABC has provided over 8,200 bicycles, helmets and locks to children in need through the “Handlebars for the Holidays” program. Every year, citizens, ABC members and those working in the commercial construction industry donate funds to Handlebars for the Holidays program through the ABC Cares Foundation, Inc., a 501(c) (3) charity.

Sheriff Wayne Ivey stated, "Through the combination of these two effective programs, we will reach more children in need of bicycles than ever before. We want to make sure every family in need can provide a magical Christmas experience for their children."

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and ABC will be providing bicycles to the following charities and not-for-profit organizations this holiday season:

Operation Hope, Brevard Achievement Center, Shiloh Church, House of Hope, St. John’s Episcopal Church, Club Esteem, Summit of Seven, KLD, Country Acres and Shop with a Cop.

The presentation of the bicycles to the above organizations will take place at the Brevard County Sheriff’s Work Farm located at 2955 Pluckbaum Road, Cocoa, from 2:00pm to 5:00pm on Saturday, December 21st.
