NR 14-71 Accidental Near Drowning in Merritt Island
On September 9, 2014, at approximately 11:00 A.M., the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office responded to Kiwanis Island Park, Merritt Island in reference to an accidental near drowning.
The investigation to date has determined that two men were fishing this morning when a 52- year-old male from Cocoa decided to swim from the boat in the area of the SR 520 bridge and Sykes Creek waterway. Upon jumping into the water, he became distressed and when the other occupant of the boat noticed, he pulled him to safety. CPR was administered by Fire Rescue personnel who then transported the victim to the hospital.
The incident is being investigated and appears to be accidental in nature. The victim is currently listed in critical condition.
