John DerossettThe suspect involved in the incident that led to the shooting of Agent Casey Smith has been arrested. 65-year-old John Frankin Derossett has been charged with three counts of Attempted Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer after an Arrest Warrant was issued for his arrest. He was transported to the Brevard County Jail last night where he is currently being held with No Bond.

The investigation revealed that Agents Smith, Jason Roberts and Peter Stead were involved in a criminal investigation involving a complaint of prostitution on the evening of August 20, 2015. During the investigation, arrangements were made to meet a female suspect at her residence in Port St John for the purpose of engaging in a sex act. At approximately 9:15 PM, the agents arrived at the Covina Street residence and Agent Stead approached the door in an undercover capacity as the prospective customer.
After making contact with the female suspect, who is believed to be the niece of the defendant, the defendant was observed at the doorway with a handgun and began firing on the agents. The agents exchanged gunfire with the defendant, during which time Agent Smith was struck as well as the defendant.

Upon recognizing that Agent Smith had been shot and the suspect was down, Agents Roberts and Stead went to Smith’s position and moved him to an area that was out of the line of fire. After moving Agent Smith to safety, it was learned that both the defendant and female suspect had re-entered the residence.

The agents administered first aid to Agent Smith until medical personnel were available and Agent Smith was then transported to the hospital. Other law enforcement personnel arrived and the scene was secured leading to the eventual surrender of the defendant and the female suspect in the residence.

After the shooting was reported, the Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team was requested, whereupon they responded to the scene and cleared the residence to ensure the house was secure.
This was not the first time that the defendant and female suspect had contact with law enforcement or these agents. Agent Roberts and Agent Smith have had interaction with one or both on at least two previous occasions with the last being the arrest of the female on July 20, 2015 for solicitation for prostitution.
