NR 16-01Sherriff’s Agents Investigate Merritt Island Shooting Death
Agents from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting death of a Merritt Island man at approximately 1:00 A.M. this morning. 26-year-old, Christian Maffeo was shot to death during an altercation that started at a New Year’s Eve party on Ocean Street in Merritt Island.
The investigation has revealed that an altercation ensued between the owner of the residence and the brother of Harrison Norton. As the Norton brothers were leaving the area, several males, including Christian Maffeo initiated a second disturbance. As the brothers entered their vehicle and attempted to drive away, their exit was blocked by the group who began causing damage to the vehicle. In an attempt to scare away the attackers, 26-year-old, Harrison Norton retrieved a firearm from the vehicle and pointed it at Maffeo who was hitting the driver’s side window with his fists. Maffeo broke out the window, reaching into the vehicle where he began to physically batter the victim who responded by firing the weapon, striking Maffeo who died at the scene. The brothers then drove away from the area and reported the incident to the Sheriff’s Office.
Homicide and Crime Scene agents have been on scene completing interviews and collecting evidence. Upon completion of the investigation, Agents will forward the case to the State Attorney’s Office for a determination as to any charges in this case.
