NR 17-51 Investigative Update: Unincorporated Cocoa Shooting
The 18-year-old victim is in stable condition at a local hospital and is expected to survive her injuries. The person handling the firearm that discharged, striking the victim is identified as 48-year-old, James Mazzo. Both reside at the residence on South Ridgewood Drive, where the incident took place.
The investigation commenced after deputies responded to the residence yesterday morning after a call was received stating that a person had been accidentally shot. Deputies arrived to find the victim suffering from a life threatening gunshot wound. The victim was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
Preliminary findings indicate that James Mazzo was showing the victim a firearm that had recently been purchased. The firearm discharged, critically wounding the victim. The Homicide Unit is continuing the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. At this time no charges have been filed.
